Americanism
The Americanism work of the Auxiliary includes all activities tending to perpetuate American ideals and to uphold the principles of American democracy. The security of America lies in a citizenry in whose minds and hearts is ingrained a true understanding of and love for those ideals and principles upon which the nation was founded; a citizenry awake to the duties of citizenship and willing to perform these duties even at the cost of great personal sacrifice. Americanism work is largely education in character and is usually divided into three phases: work with the youth, the adult, and the community. All matters pertaining to the flag or patriotic education are rightly classified as Americanism activities.
Chapel
of Four Chaplains Spirit of Youth Foundation This foundation was established by the American Legion Auxiliary as a nonprofit perpetual trust. Tax deductible contributions from individuals, organizations, and estates are the basis of this permanent endowment fund for youth. The trust is expended for programs that benefit the youth of our nation and to enrich those programs that already exist. Flag Etiquette and Citizenship Programs The purpose of flag education is to build patriotism in our youth and to develop a thorough understanding of proper flag display. Through the Americanism program, Auxiliary members provide educational opportunities for our classrooms by providing individual flags to students, giving presentations on the care and respect for the Flag, and promoting the Americanism Essay Contest. Girls Scout Troops are sponsored, debate contests organized, and town meetings planned. Get Out the Vote Every American citizen of voting age has a Constitutional right to vote. As members of the American Legion Auxiliary we do not endorse candidates or take a public stand on issues, but we can provide incentives to see that citizens are knowledgeable about candidates and issues through open forums and meetings.
Proper Respect of Traditional Holidays Our rich heritage will be
preserved by observance of patriotic and traditional holidays that are reminders
of beliefs and ideals of the United States. Participation in community
celebrations is encouraged.
American Essay Contest
This program is placed into schools (grades 3 through 12) by local Units. Not
all schools participate. If you would like to have this opportunity in your
school, contact your school principal and ask that the local Unit be asked to
sponsor the contest.
Citizenship and Naturalization
Unit members promote this program by tutoring those studying to become a
citizen, attending swearing in ceremonies, and honoring new citizens with the
gifts of patriotism - flags. America's Veterans A 23-minute video and activities for the classroom (Grades 5 - 8) are available by contacting The American Legion or by calling (317) 630-1212.
